The age old question that comes to mind when talking about go karting is steel versus wood for your go kart frame. Well maybe not an age old question but definitely a question that surfaced when metal tubing became readily available at the turn of the century. For many generations, including my father and his father, a go kart frame was made from wood. It was cheaper, and metal was not readily available.
Welding a frame together is not that bad. It first involves, obviously, getting all the pieces to the right length and shape. Then hold them all together, and tack-weld the frame together. The biggest trick is getting everything to stay straight and flat. I typically use a homemade jig and clamp the pieces together. Then I weld the frame up solid after I have tacked it together.
Snips look like scissors, however they are very heavy duty and are the most common cutting tools in sheet Hydro dipping Melbourne work. You will need at least three pairs of snips: left cutting, right cutting and straight cutting.
If you repeat something over and over and over and over, your body gives out at some point. After cutting up these table parts, I knew I couldn’t go on doing this for a hobby. I knew something would have to change or the new hobby would break my body.
A company that offers a wide range of products is also a good one to deal with. They will be less apt to push you into buying the most expensive unit on the market. Look for one that offers a range of furnaces, from standard efficiency to extreme efficiency.
So for general fabrication, short circuit mig is the way to go because general fabrication requires welding in all positions as well as all thicknesses of steel… all the way from thin sheet metal thickness, up the 1/2″ thick and even thicker.
Learning how to weld stainless steel comes down to using the correct equipment and choosing the best process for the job. For basic welding of stainless the arc or mig process will suffice, however if you require a top quality finish or are constructing an item that requires a clean finish such as a commercial food mixing component the tig welder is the way to go. As with everything using the correct process and practice will soon get you to expert status in no time.
