The discs are found between the vertebrae or bones in the back. They simply act as shock absorbers. As discs contain 70% of water, the disc resembles a balloon filled with water which is being squished like a sandwich by the bones. When we sit, the bones come closer together and squish the balloon even more, and the balloon begins to bulge outwards, pressing on nerves. Sometimes, when we do a lot of sitting (ie in front of computers most of the day), the balloon beings to leak, and some of the water begins to press on nerves more constantly, which then gives rise to chronic or prolonged back pain.
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that wrap around like a hammock on the underside of the bladder and rectum. They support the bladder, uterus and rectum.
Once you have located your pelvic floor muscles, contract these muscles slowly for 5-10 seconds, then relax, repeating 10-20 times. These are called slow pull-ups.
Physical therapies – these are the activities that involve the stretching and strengthening of the muscles of the spine where the pains emanate. A physiotherapist tokai is usually employed to carry out this activity.
Poor posture is when your joints (shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles) do not align properly. The improper alignment causes some muscles to work harder than the others and become tense while the other muscles weaken. Pain, swelling, and often, discoloration, are the usual symptoms of a fracture in the foot. You may still be able to walk, but this usually increases the pain. I have found this exercise to be by far the most effective for stabilizing my back. Don’t let it’s simplicity fool you, the muscles you are exercising are very powerful and are the best for true back support. So it is my hope exercising these muscles is as beneficial for your back as it has been for mine.
