Be extremely careful by making sure everyone is out of the area and that the electric winch operator is well shielded. If the electric warn winch vs superwinch cable or chain breaks, or if the chain slips off the stump, a deadly catapulted steel whip can result. Any property in range could also be severely damaged including the vehicle.
Travel with another vehicle. This one should go without saying; it’s just downright foolish to go out in to remote areas by yourself without any other rigs along with you. What if your rig gets disabled and you have no cell coverage? Worse yet, what happens if you get hurt?
If your vehicle is stuck in mud, you’ll have to address the problem differently. When the mud isn’t too deep, your snow chains might give you the traction you need. You can also try clearing away some of the mud with your shovel. Then, place some other material in front of the tires for traction. Your wood pieces might work, or you could use rocks and debris from the area.
A couple weeks ago while cruising the Red Rocker on some dirt trails; I found a wallet with a few grand inside. There was no ID or phone numbers inside, nothing but 23 crispy new Benjamins and a Starbucks gift card. The card actually had $5.29 on it, nearly enough to get me a half-caff caramel macchiato with extra whipped cream. Wahoo what electric winch a score! I was hopped-up on caffeine, sugar and had 2300 smackers burning a hole in my pocket.
If launching by yourself, retrieve the dock line from the bow of the boat, loosen the winch, unhook the winch and attach the knotted end of the dock line from the bow to the trailer best winch hook.
Wheel Hubs Boat trailers have bearings in their hubs to facilitate easy rolling of the wheels on the trailer. These bearing require grease as they will get pitted and out of round if they are left un-greased and are submerged under water (as happens when launching or retrieving your boat). It’s a good idea to install ‘Bearing Buddy’ grease caps over the hubs to make it real easy to ensure that the bearings are properly lubricated. They come complete with a grease fitting so that the boat owner can easily grease top off the grease in the hubs with a simple grease gun. Using such an inexpensive tool, you can apply the grease without getting all messy.
If you’re not comfortable with the area, or not comfortable with your rig, find a local who is. So, before you do something stupid, that would get yourself in trouble or hurt, do something smart and make some lifetime friends in the process.
