A catalytic Converter is a small device that converts exhaust fumes from an internal combustion motor to less-polluting substances to catalyze a reduction reaction. Gaseous emissions are formed when gasoline is burned in an internal combustion engine. Some gases pass through the exhaust pipes, and combine with oxygen in the exhaust gases. Many gases escape the engine via the exhaust outlets. These are known as particulate emission. The catalytic converter reduces these particulates so they do not escape into the air.
There are many gaseous emissions that can easily be combusted using a catalytic convertor. They include hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide along with nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and others. These gaseous emissions react with oxygen in the exhaust and produce more pollutants that are more dangerous for the environment. These gases also produce high levels nitrogen oxide, which is harmful to the atmosphere when it is released.
The most common catalytic converter type and the most commonly found in vehicles is the combusted mixture, also known by the ‘hot exhaust’. This is formed by the combustion of exhaust gases and other gases in the engine. The catalytic converter eliminates this by combining with oxygen in the exhaust gases and combining them with hydrogen in the muffler. This creates hot exhaust gasses that do not react with oxygen in the atmosphere and therefore are much safer to the environment.
Many vehicles that don’t come with catalytic convertors have been in the market for many years. These vehicles have had problems removing all exhaust gasses from the system. A catalytic conversion can also be stolen or at risk of theft, which could make it very difficult for the vehicle to be repaired. If the converter ever gets stolen, it could be easy to track it down because it has a unique serial number. The starter could be stuck open and the vehicle may not start. This could allow police to quickly recover the vehicle, which could save someone’s life in the event that the starter falls off while being towed.
Two chemicals make up the catalytic converter. One is a reduction catalyst and one is a reductase. A reduction catalyst actually reduces the amount of the toxic metal that is in the catalyst, thus allowing the reaction to take place. The platinum in the catalyst absorbs the reductase and allows the reaction to happen. However, it’s illegal to remove the platinum from a vehicle in order to fix it. This is because platinum is a precious metal and could be sold for a high price if removed from the car. If the catalytic device isn’t working properly, a skilled criminal could easily steal it and resell on the blackmarket.
Another problem with catalytic conversions is that they can often be made in an incorrect way. Sometimes, a catalytic convert might not close completely. This means that some gases are still emitted into the exhaust system. Some gases could escape the catalytic conversion and enter the engine, in addition to the ones that are emitted through the exhaust. These illegal emissions can lead to serious problems such as engine failure and emission-induced engine melting.
Many catalytic converters available today don’t burn platinum, but instead use palladium or silver. While palladium can remove pollutants very well, it is also more costly to produce than platinum. If your car needs a new catalytic converter, be sure to make sure it is made from platinum, as it is the only metal that completely releases its energy when exposed to exhaust fumes.
